RMAN – Create a new catalog

You need to have a database where the catalog will be created. If you don’t have it, you can start from the ground and install new database server or you can create a new database on existing server.

Create a user

Connect to recovery database and create a user and schema for the recovery catalog. Example of SQL command:

CREATE USER rman IDENTIFIED BY ********
TEMPORARY TABLESPACE temp
DEFAULT TABLESPACE catalog
QUOTA UNLIMITED ON catalog;
wiki oracle rman create a new catalog

Grant recovery_catalog_owner role to created user. This role allows user to maintain the recovery catalog. Example of SQL command:

GRANT recovery_catalog_owner TO rman;wiki oracle rman create a new catalog

Create a catalog

Connect to catalog with RMAN

Connect to catalog with RMAN under the RMAN database environment. Example of UNIX command (execute under same environment/server as previous steps):

rman catalog <USERID>/<PASSWORD>@<RMANDB>

Example of UNIX command:

rman catalog rman/********@rcvcatwiki oracle rman create a new catalog

Create catalog

Now you can execute command to create the catalog. Execute following RMAN command:

create catalog;wiki oracle rman create a new catalog

Register the database

Connect to a database you want to register with RMAN and connect also to recovery catalog. Example of UNIX command:

rman target / catalog rman/********@rcvcatwiki oracle rman create a new catalog

Register database using following SQL command:

register database;wiki oracle rman create a new catalog
